What is SAM?
SAM stands for System Administration And Maintenance. SAM is the field of work in which someone manages one or more system, be they software, hardware, servers or workstations and maintain the system.
To understand SAM better, we need to break the term SAM into System, Administration and Maintenance and understand it separately:
System:
System is an organized collection of parts(or subsystem)that are highly integrated to accomplish an overall goal. The system has various inputs, which go through certain process to produce certain outputs, which together accomplish the overall desired goal for the system.
So a system is usually made up of many smaller systems or subsystems. For example: an organization is made up of many administrative and management function, products, services, groups and individuals. If one part of a system is changed, the nature of the overall system change as well.
The goals of system are:-
- Skills and competencies in information system and operations management to contribute to an organization upon entry.
- Knowledge of the process of organization and the key role that the information system plays.
- Capability and initiative to lead organization through technological changes.
- Discernment of and responsible approaches to ethical issues in technology use by society, organizations and individuals.
Administration:
Administration is the management of an office, business or an organization. It involves the efficient organisation of people, information and other resources to achieve organisational objectives.
The major responsibility of an administrator is to ensure the efficient performance of all departments in an organization. They act as a connecting link between the senior management and the employees. They provide motivation to the work force and make them realize the goals of the organization.
The responsibilities of a system administrator:-
- Morning checks of system software.
- Performance backup of data.
- Applying operating system updates and configure changes.
- Installing and configuring new hardware/software.
- Answering technical queries.
- Responsibility for security.
Maintenance:
Maintenance in general can be defined as effort taken to keep the condition and performance of a machine always like the condition and performance of a machine is still new.
Types of Maintenance:-
- Corrective Maintenance
- Preventive Maintenance
- Predictive Maintenance
- Zero Hours Maintenance
- Periodic Maintenance
Corrective maintenance:-
The set of task is destined to correct the defects to be found in the different equipment and that are communicated to the maintenance department by users of the same equipment.
Preventive Maintenance:-
Its mission is to maintain a level of certain service on equipment, programming, the intervention of their vulnerabilities in the most opportune time, if the equipment is inspected even or if it has not given any symptoms of having the problem.
Predictive Maintenance:-
It pursues constantly know and report the status and operational capacity of the installation by knowing the values of certain variables, which represents such state and operational ability. To apply this maintenance it is necessary to identify physical variables, which variation is indicative off problems that may be appearing on the equipment. This maintenance, it is the most technical, since it requires advanced technical resources and at times of strong mathematical, physical and technical knowledge.
Zero Hour Maintenance(Overhaul):-
The set of tasks whose goal is to review the equipment at scheduled intervals before appearing any failure, either when the reliability of the equipment has decreased considerably so it is risky to make forecast of productivity capacity.
Periodic Maintenance:-
The basic maintenance of equipment made by the user of it. It consist of series of elementary task(data collection, visual inspection, cleaning, lubrication)for which no extensive training is necessary. This type of maintenance is based on TPM(Total Productive Maintenance).
